Overheating Yanmar 2QM20 Engine
Eric Palmer posted the following:
"My 2QM20 Yanmar engine overheats after about 20 minutes. The engine is 20 years old with light use. I have a raw water strainer and the thru hull is clean, there is a new impeller, I checked thermostat, cleaned exhaust elbow of salt build up and replaced the zincs. It appears to discharge some fuel / light oil in exhaust water. Is this normal? It seems to be discharging plenty of water?"
Gordon Torresen responded to Eric:
"There are two ways to get plenty of water out the transom. One is via the by-pass and the other is through the engine. The thermostat controls the route. If your thermostat fails to open, the result is an overheated engine with plenty of water out the transom.
Although you could have water flow blockage elsewhere, I would start with the thermostat."
The Marine Diesel Direct forum now contains more than 500 posts from marine engine owners like you. If you have a question or would like to join in on the discussion, we look forward to hearing from you. Check out the searchable discussion forums at:

ADDING AN HOUR METER TO YOUR ENGINE
Another question from the Torresen Marine Diesel Direct Forums
Bill Striegel posted the following message in our forums.
My 1982 Yanmar 3GMD has a tachometer, but no hour meter. What the easiest way to attach one to my engine? Do you have any brand recommendations? What about the display, LCD readout, LED, or regular "tumbler" system? Did Yanmar have a tachometer / hour-meter combo?
Gordon Torresen answered:
An hour meter is basically a clock that only runs while the key switch is on. Since it does not provide information required during operation, it can be mounted anywhere. Meters manufactured by Teleflex are readily available at marine stores (we sell them). If you choose to mount the readout out of the weather, they are available from automotive stores.
